Congratulations to President Bush for doing the right thing today in vetoing the Embryonic Stem Cell Research funding bill. It was courageous and absolutely the right thing to do for many reasons. Shame on Bill Frist who is a doctor and a Christian and ought to know better.
This whole debate is so ludicrous because first of all, embryonic stem cell research is not in danger of being banned (unfortunately), only the federal funding of it. Secondly, it isn't even promising. Why aren't private companies and individuals rushing to fund it if it is so promising? Because it isn't. According to many studies,
these cell lines produce tumors or mutate into non-therapeutic stem cells. Scientists aren't even promising any cures within the next 10 years.
On the other hand, adult stem cell and cord blood research has shown immense promise. To quote Wolfgang Lillge, M.D., "Embryonic stem cells have not yet been used for even one therapy, while adult stem cells have already been successfully used in numerous patients, including for cardiac infarction (death of some of the heart tissue)." Check out his entire article. There are no ethical dilemmas surrounding adult stem cell research or use and it is much more promising than embryonic stem cell research. So why are so many pushing so hard for it?
It's about protecting abortion rights. If America can become convinced embryos are actually life and that scientists are performing experiments on them, perhaps they will have a new realization that abortion, at any trimester, ends life and doesn't just remove a clump of cells. To protect abortion, the left and their media are willing to outright lie, distort, and omit the facts hoping that the American people will buy it hook, line, and sinker. If Senator Bill Frist, who I used to admire, can be deceived then so can many Americans.
When does life begin? When does a soul "enter" a forming human being? Psalm 139:15, 16 says, "My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them." The Hebrew word for "my substance" indicates the embryo. This tells me that the structure and meaning of that person's life are all established from the beginning by God.
Embryonic stem cell research is bad science, unethical, and grievous to God. That's good enough for me.
