It is a woman's perogative, after all, to change her mind... and I think I'm ready to cheer everyone up a little if you'll let me attempt it!
Our thorough drubbing at the polls yesterday got me thinking that we have no reason to be defeated, because we can always count on the Dems to be stark raving mad when it comes to their being in power. This should be like shooting fish in a barrel! Likewise, Rumsfeld's resignation today demonstrates a re-focus and the Republicans are simply not good at deceit and chicanery as they are well aware, which will force them back into their more natural state of solid conservatism. They are simply not good at playing both sides of an issue, and they just tried 'watering' themselves down and it failed miserably.
Now that I've thought about it a while...I think that the real reason we lost was NOT, primarily due to bad press with the War in Iraq...On the contrary it was due to a lack of inspiration of our conservative base.
What if the Republicans had made serious attempts to pass Social Security Reform and the Democrats obstructed it (as usual)? What if the Republicans had made a serious attempt to close the border and the Democrats obstructed it (as usual)? What if the Republicans had made a serious effort at reducing the size of government and the Democrats obstructed it (as usual)? What if the Republicans had made an aggressive overhaul of our tax system and the Democrats opposed it again (as usual)? I'll tell you what would have happened: The Base would have shown up and voted. Our republicans did very little to inspire us to vote for them again because they accomplished very little other than getting good judges on the Supreme Court and extending the tax cuts until 2010.
We could have been unstoppable, if our Republicans would have grown a spine and fought harder when they were in power. If they truly believed in their mission, they wouldn't have feared the backlash and could have turned it against the Dems like they did in 2004 and 2000. I am not saying the things they did accomplish were not vitally important to our country, but there was so much more that could have been done! It left very little remarkable accomplishments to contrast against the Democrats.
Now that I sit back and look at it, if you truly are a conservative person who doesn't align yourself with a particular party (swing voter)I can see how there is very little distinction between the two parties when it comes to accomplishing things, because now they have proven that neither party can get much done.
The majority of this country is still conservative. If we hadn't had such a bunch of 'girls' leading our party, they would have been willing to stand up for conservatism and thus draw out the the real agenda of the Democrats, which would have still been great for us because it would either force them to oppose us and commit political suicide, or support us and pass the laws we wanted. Instead, we were left with no ammunition to fling at the Democrats and thus no way to compare ourselves as superior to them.
The good news is, we can work towards this 'distinction' now that we have a fresh start and will have more seats up for grabs in two years. You know the Dems will act crazy now that they have control of congress. If there's one thing we can count on, it's the Democrats screwing everything up and being a pain in the arse. It's not like swing voters voted for Dems instead of us, it's that we didn't inspire our base to show up, which is more easily fixed than we think.
I hope this makes everyone feel a little bit better about getting our butts kicked yesterday! Cheer up, happy campers! We got rid of Lincoln Chafee!
